Dental caries assessment among 12 and 15 year old school going children in urban and rural settlements of Bangalore, India

Abstract

Aim: To assess caries status among urban and rural school going children of Bangalore district. Material and methods: A total of 2670 children aged 12 and 15 years belonging to urban and rural higher primary schools and high schools were included in the study. A proforma was prepared to record the information and indices with the help of World Health Organization (WHO) oral assessment form. Results: In the 12 year age group, mean number of decayed, missing and filled teeth in urban male children was 0.83 ±1.05 and among the rural males it was 0.64±1.06. The mean DMFT among the urban females in the same age group was 0.88±1.11 and among the rural females it was 0.69±1.07. Among the 15 year age group, the mean DMFT in urban males was 1.31±1.42 and among the rural males it was 0.73±0.98. The mean DMFT among the urban females in the same age group was 1.50 ±1.60 and among the rural females it was 0.89 ±1.34. Conclusions: The prevalence of dental caries was low in both urban and rural study population while comparing with similar results. The caries prevalence was more prevalent among urban population. Prevalence of dental caries was increasing with advancement of age and more prevalent among females.
